In addition to his position at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr Vazquez is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, USA.  He received his medical education at the Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic.  He completed his internship and a residency in internal medicine at the University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, Illinois, USA, and served a 3-year fellowship in infectious diseases at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan.

Dr Vazquez has published over 300 articles, abstracts, and book chapters, and is an ad hoc reviewer for many journals. His basic research interests are focused on the molecular epidemiology of fungal infections, mechanisms of antifungal resistance, antifungal susceptibility, and the characterization and interaction of polymicrobial biofilms in infectious diseases. His clinical research interests include the epidemiology and management of mucosal and systemic fungal infections. He has participated in over 70 phase II, III, and IV clinical trials evaluating new antimicrobials, antivirals, and antifungals in the management of candidemia, invasive candidiasis, aspergillosis, gram-positive bacteremias, skin/soft tissue infections, complicated urinary tract infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, serious Influenza infections and respiratory tract infections.

Dr Vazquez serves on the scientific advisory board of the Comprehensive AIDS Alliance of Detroit, and is a 20 year member of the Mycoses Study Group.  He is also the Chair of the Antimicrobial Subcommittee and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Henry Ford Hospital.
